This collection of reduction fired stoneware comes from the famous pottery established in Cornwall in the 1920s by Bernard Leach. The concept of a range of functional and beautiful everyday tableware made with a local clay was central to Leach’s philosophy. Leach Standard Ware pottery is thrown on the wheel by an international team of production potters, volunteers and apprentices. The clay used is stoneware clay from Doble’s claypit in St Agnes, Cornwall – much the same clay as was used in the original Leach Standard Ware production. The range of glazes are selected and developed for their quality and colour; the pots are fired to 1280 degrees Celsius resulting in a dense and durable product . During the firing, the amount of oxygen in the kiln’s atmosphere is reduced and the flame pulls oxygen from the clay and glazes instead, infusing the glazes with deep, rich, iron tones. Across each colour there can be significant variation in the glaze and shape – each piece is unique and handmade. Bowls shown are in Dolomite glaze – this creamy blue-white glaze is named after the high percentage of the mineral dolomite found in the glaze mix.
